COMMERCIALS DEPARTMENT

The department offers the following subjects:

  1. Accounting – both at IGCSE and Advanced Level.
  2. Business at Advanced Level and Business Studies at IGCSE.
  3. Travel and Tourism at IGCSE

IGCSE Accounting (0452) is commenced in form one to give pupils enough time to prepare for the final examinations in form four. By second term in form four, the syllabus will be completed and thus, ensure thorough preparations for the final examinations.

IGCSE Business Studies (0450) is commenced at form three and is done by students who choose not to do Accounting at this level. The school syllabus has been broken into 5 terms so that by end of second term in form 4, the syllabus will be completed and thus, ensure extensive revision prior to the final examinations in the third and final term of the course.

IGCSE Travel and Tourism (0471) is commenced at form three and is one of the optional subjects at this level. The school syllabus is broken into 5 terms so as to finish the syllabus by end of second term in form 4. Students are exposed to the tourism industry through a number of tours so that they can relate the theory learnt to the practical side of things.

A Level Accounting (9706) enrols only those pupils who would have done and passed Accounting at O Level or IGCSE with at least grade C. That foundation is necessary since the syllabus assumes that certain basic concepts would have been acquired prior to A Level. The school syllabus is designed in such a manner that by beginning of second term in Upper 6, revision starts in preparation for the final examinations.

A Level Business (9609) enrols pupils, not necessarily with a commercial background only, but good grades in English and/or Mathematics are the major prerequisites. This is meant to help students to handle the quantitative aspects as well as the essays contained in the three examination papers written after the two-year course. Just like A Level Accounting, preparation for the final examination starts at the beginning of second term in Upper 6 so as to give the pupils proper grounding for them to handle the demanding examination.

The department has highly qualified, experienced and self-driven teachers who always work tirelessly to get the best out their pupils.

The members of the department and the subject(s) they teach are as follows:

  1. Mr. T. Mukamba (HOD) – Business and Accounting
  2. Mr. S.R. Marere – Accounting
  3. Mr. G. Nhananga – Accounting
  4. Mrs. P. Patresi – Business  and Accounting
  5. Mr F. Mushininga – Business and Travel and Tourism.

What drives the department?

The department believes that teaching is not merely a life work, a profession, an occupation, a struggle but a passion. Members of the department love to teach as a painter loves to paint, as a musician loves to play and as a singer loves to sing. They all subscribe to the notion that teaching is the stimulation, guidance, direction and encouragement of learning, thus, the use of student-centred approaches is part of their DNA.

Since the department deals with 21st century learners who need immediate feedback, who are motivated by interactive and hands-on learning, by challenge and curiosity, by competition and using winning strategies, and who need more freedom and independence, the teachers use relevant tools and student-centred methods, inquiry based methods that stimulate critical thinking, methods that develop students’ potential and foster their learning abilities.

The department also believes that teaching is like fishing where one has to use different lures for different situations, hence, the teachers use different methods for different learners. The department knows that teaching is like beautiful music where instructional methods are like the instruments, when played alone they make sound but when played together in tune, rhythm and feeling, they become amazing music, therefore, they use the blended approach in order to accommodate different learners.

The department also believes in continuous professional development so that they are in a position to work with today’s learners who are digital natives. As rightly put across by Alvin Toffier, “The illiterate of the 21st century are not those who cannot read and write but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn”.

The department also believes in teamwork since ‘the whole is always greater than the sum of its parts’. The members complement each other, hence, celebrate successes together and commiserate together in times of grief.

Overall, the department believes that, “to accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan but also believe”.
