“Don’t raise your voice, improve your argument.” Nelson Mandela. We stood by this saying with hearts full of hope and expectation. Each debater would mime silently in the bus. The weather was not in our favour as most cue cards were being blown from the backseat to the driver’s seat. What more could Mother Nature have in store for us! As soon as we arrived to Peterhouse Boys the president acknowledged the cold weather and reassured us that by the time we got to the finals it would be, ‘heaty.’

Junior team: Rutendo Magwindiri, Evelyn Magonziwa, Kundai Matinyarare, Kundai Matinyarare, Nk’isu Stumbeko, Elizabeth Mahovo.
Senior team: Chido Machakaire (President), Lorraine Nyagumbo, Michelle Chauraya, Grace Marere, Rutendo Mutyatyu, Kudzai Maziriri, Ruvimbo Gwarada

We fought a good fight as we had to start removing our blazers by the time we had to go for the second motion. Juniors won their first two motions but unfortunately lost their third motion. This cost them a chance in the semi-finals however they still adjusted their ties as they had hope for the seniors. First, Second and Third motion was laid in our hands. As we got prepared for the semi-finals against Marondera High we were told one of the debaters was her Excellency the Junior President of Zimbabwe, all of a sudden it got hot.

‘Through hard work we shall achieve,” and surely we battled it out with Marondera High and won. When the finals came we were set on breaking a record for it was the first time Watershed had made it higher than the semi-finals.

“POINT OF INFORMATION!!”  “WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE!!” and some sips of water were the only things left in the finals against Monte Cassino. The blinking audience and the rebuttals made it much more intense. Before we knew it, all we were left with were crossed fingers. The treasure sadly was not on our side but even though my team stood tall. Proud and full of hope for the next senior debate team to cross the finish line. Truly we were blessed to have an amazing coach Mrs Bingepinge just by our shoulders and God for changing the weather at the end of the day.
